The new Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev. Justin Welby, is being enthroned at Canterbury Cathedral today. Many Concorde students in Canterbury are taking the opportunity to head down to the Cathedral districts to get a glimpse of the ceremony, so we hope to have some pictures or first-hand accounts to share soon – watch this space!
Although he was announced as the new Archbishop back in November last year, the enthronement marks the day Rev. Welby formally takes up his new position, swearing an oath of obedience and also giving his first sermon as Archbishop in the Cathedral itself.
The ceremony in the Cathedral will feature a range of music with anthems sung by Canterbury Cathedral Choir (including a new commission from famous British composer Michael Berkeley) and a range of other hymns and music that reflect the diversity and traditions of the Church of England. You can listen to the ceremony on BBC Radio 4 (live today starting at 2.50pm) if you would like to hear the music.
The Archbishop of Canterbury also serves as the Chancellor at Canterbury Christ Church University. This makes him the ceremonial head of the university, which has campuses in Medway, Tunbridge Wells, Broadstairs and Folkestone as well as in Canterbury.
